Holdfast Woodworking. After searching for traditional holdfasts for it and coming up with only boutique hand-forged holdfasts for a hand-forged price, this holdfast made its way to me. At first, it didn't hold well in the holes at all.
As you can see from the photo below, the larger hole (bottom half of the wood) helps the holdfast have more room to wedge itself. Of course now that I am in the middle of building a Roubo workbench, holdfasts have been on my mind. Made this dust shroud for a friend #photographybyroy using the vetric job sheets created by #cbcguitar.
As simple as the idea is, the execution and engineering involved in making a good holdfast are complex.
The holdfasts are available from www.toolsforworkingwood.com.
By giving the holdfast a firm blow with a mallet it locks into the hole holding the work in place. In use the slightly undersized holdfast goes into a hole drilled in the bench top. A pair of holdfasts is like having an extra set of super-strong hands.
